Jude

The knock on Jude’s hotel door interrupted his research on the RNLI, which annoyed him, as he was getting to grips with all the volunteer jobs on offer. He hadn’t mentioned that part to his mother, as baby steps seemed appropriate. It was one thing to inform her of his business ideas and relocation plans, but he wasn’t sure she would be able to take on board the fact her son wanted to risk his own life saving people from drowning, especially if it was because they had gone out in a storm to take photographs of incoming waves.

Another thump hit his door, so he closed his laptop, scrambled off the bed, and went to see who was bothering him at nine o’clock at night.

‘Harriet?’ He combed his fingers through his dishevelled hair, causing her to gaze in that direction. ‘I thought Milly and Warren took you home earlier.’

‘They did, but I came back.’

He checked over her shoulder, almost toppling straight into her. ‘On your own?’

‘Yes. I was perfectly safe, Jude. In fact, I just saw Warren in the bar downstairs with one of the reporters who follow us around. They were drinking cocktails and taking pictures of them. Well, Warren was. I don’t think anyone’s lurking at this time of the night.’

‘You’d be surprised.’

‘I think they would all assume Keaton is passed out drunk by now.’

‘Have you been up there?’

‘No. I’ve come to see you.’ She peered around his body, showing him she was waiting to be invited inside.

Jude was half asleep, half preoccupied with the RNLI, and half amazed to see her. ‘Oh, erm, yeah, come in.’

Harriet twisted on one heel and fiddled with the bottom of her pale-grey shirt. ‘Are you sure? Only, you don’t look too pleased to see me.’

‘What?’ He frowned in confusion at her still standing in the corridor. ‘Of course I’m pleased to see you. Why wouldn’t I be? Please, Hal, come inside.’

She walked forward, brushing past his arm with her own, which was one touch too many for him to handle rationally.

Jude closed the door, caught her hand, spun her around, and brought her close into his chest. He dipped his head and lowered his lips onto hers, feeling the warmth inside him move in all directions before settling in his heart.

Harriet let out the softest of moans, which only caused Jude to deepen his kiss. He lifted her, happy she responded by wrapping her legs around him, then lowered her onto his bed.

Oh God, what am I gonna do with this woman? She’s killing me here. I wanna strip her naked and make love to her till the sun comes up and then even ignore that deadline.

He brushed back her hair and stared into the ocean in her eyes. ‘You’re so beautiful, Harriet. So very, very beautiful.’

She stroked along his jaw. ‘I came here to tell you I really, really like you, Jude. I want you to know.’

He kissed the tip of her nose, which led to him kissing her cheek and then the length of her neck.
